Envoy Calls for Direct Yugoslavia-UN Talks

Yugoslavia on May 24 voiced its hope to see that the future UN resolution on Kosovo is "the result of the direct negotiation between the Yugoslav Government and the United Nations," because only in this way can the proposed resolution be carried out in the future.

Vladislav Jovanovic, charge d'affaires of the Yugoslav Mission to the United Nations, told the press conference that "We expect the future resolution of the Security Council to be different from the document of NATO, not to be any ultimatum or dictate."

However, the Yugoslav ambassador said that he wants to see the future UN resolution "to be the result of the direct negotiation between the Yugoslav Government and the United Nations. And only on that basis, such a resolution can have a chance to be implemented."

"Of course, the bombing campaign should stop, this is the pre-condition of any peace efforts and achievement of any peace settlement," he said.

The senior Yugoslav diplomat made the remarks as the NATO bombing entered the third month on May 24, creating serious humanitarian crisis not only in Yugoslavia, but also in the Balkans.

Jovanovic said that the Group of Eight statement, issued about two weeks ago in Germany, is the basis for any future dialog on a political solution.

Foreign ministers from seven major Western countries and Russia issued a statement, saying that any foreign military presence in Kosovo should be approved by the UN Security Council.

"We welcome peace initiatives from other countries," he said, "We are nevertheless determined to defend our country by all means until the very end." (Xinhua)
