Russian Envoy Arrives for More Talks
Viktor Chernomyrdin, Russian envoy for Yugoslavia, arrived in Belgrade on May 19 afternoon to resume talks with Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.
The former Russian Prime Minister was due to inform the Yugoslav president about the talks held between Russia and the United States in Helsinki, Finland, earlier in the day.
Present at the Helsinki talks were Chernomyrdin, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbot and Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari.
The Russian news agency Itar-Tass quoted reliable sources as saying that the Helsinki talks "had formulated a position aimed at stopping the NATO aggression on Yugoslavia".
Both May 18 and May 19's talks were held behind closed doors, with the aim at designing an end to the NATO air strikes against the Balkan country.
The NATO air raids started on March 24 and have continued for the past 56 days.
After the Italian-German summit, the German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder voiced in Rome a possible suspension of NATO bombings, which he said "will put an end to attacks for a limited time,"
Schroeder on May 18 said the use of German ground troops was not on the agenda. (Xinhua)
