Heartfelt Regret Expressed by US National Academy of Sciences President
Bruce Alberts, president of the US National Academy of Sciences, conveyed in a letter on May 13 the most heartfelt regret of the academy for the recent deaths and injuries at the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade.
"While nothing can ease the pain felt by the families of the innocent journalists killed in the bombing and, indeed, all of the citizens of China, we hope that our expression of sympathy will be regarded as an indication of the scientific community's depth of feeling about this tragedy." Alberts said in the letter to President Lu Yongxiang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President Zhou Guangzhao of the China Association for Sciences and Technology.
"This event - which has caused such anguish in both of our countries and around the world - further underscores the need for scientists to maintain free and open communication, and we very much hope that our own interaction will serve as an example of this cooperative spirit." He wrote.
"Again, please accept our most sincere apology for this unfortunate incident, and the tragic deaths of your compatriots." Alberts concluded.
