Chinese Leader Calls for Faster Tourism Development
Vice Premier Qian Qichen, during a visit to Yunnan Province on May 16-19, said that China should take advantage of good opportunities to boost the development of its tourist industry.
Qian said that the number of foreign tourists in China in the first quarter increased 15.5 percent from the same period last year and that domestic tourism is booming and that this provides a solid base for developing tourism this year.
China's tourism will also be blessed by the central government's decision to make tourism a new economic growth point, the return of Macao to the motherland in December, the 50th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, and the arrival of the year 2000, he said.
He urged all regions to place great importance on improving tourism and said that the quality of service is vital to the industry.
The NATO attack on the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia on May 7 has caused great indignation among the Chinese, he said, adding that the anger should be turned into strength to do work well and create a better tourist environment to serve tourists from home and abroad. (Xinhua)
