Omani Sultan Meets Chinese Top Adviser

Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), meets with Qaboos Bin Said, the Sultan of Oman on May 18.

Li remarked that China should be good at conducting extensive exchanges and cooperation with other countries and be bold in absorbing foreign experience and civilization, a top Chinese leader has said.

Li is on a four-day official visit to Oman, the first by the leader of China's top advisory institution and the third leg of his four-country tour to Asia and Africa.

Li describes Oman as one of the earliest countries in the world to engage in economic and cultural exchanges with China, citing the "Silk Road" which linked China and Oman some 13 centuries ago. The sea route pioneered by the Suhar ship from Oman has since witnessed frequent exchanges between the two peoples. And all this was done at difficult conditions. Today, there are more favorable communications and transportation conditions, "we should all the more carry forward the traditions of our ascendants to open a new chapter in Sino-Oman relations," Li stated.

Li also handed over a letter from Chinese President Jiang Zemin to Qaboos, which deals with ways of bolstering bilateral relations and strengthening cooperation in international issues of common interest. Li briefed Qaboos on China's commitment to enhance its traditional friendship with Oman. Li told his host that China has always attached importance to developing mutually beneficial cooperative ties with Oman.

Qaboos, who is concurrently the Prime Minister, said he was satisfied with the development of the bilateral relations, particularly the exchanges and cooperation in political, economic and cultural fields. The Omani Sultan highly valued China's achievements over the past 20 years, saying China is a country with extreme importance in the world and China should play its due role internationally to benefit the people the world over.
