Unswervingly Implementing Independent Foreign Policy of Peace
In his speech given at the meeting welcoming Chinese personnel back from Yugoslavia, President Jiang Zemin stressed the need to continue to unswervingly carry out the independent foreign policy of peace. While engaging in the in-depth study of President Jiang's speech, cadres and the masses alike in various social circles across the country indicated that we, the peace-loving Chinese people, are willing to maintain friendly contacts with the people of various countries around the world, at the same time, we firmly oppose hegemony and power politics and resolutely defend state sovereignty and national dignity.
Recently, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Shanxi, Hebei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Henan, Hunan, Hainan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu, Guangxi and some other provinces and autonomous regions respectively held standing committee meetings of Party committees or forums to conscientiously comprehend the essence of President Jiang's speech. Participants said they ask the US-led NATO to make a thorough investigation into the incident of the missile attack on the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia and publish the results. This demand of ours, they said, is a reasonable one for the defense of state sovereignty and national dignity, as well as a just move to safeguard the norms of the international relations and world peace. "Opposition to hegemonism and power politics is our consistent just stand", they said, adding "we will continue to persist in the independent foreign policy of peace and continue to develop friendly and cooperative relations with various countries around the world on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence."
Over the past few days, officers and men of the Shaanxi Provincial Military Area Command have held forums at which they expressed resolute support of President Jiang Zemin's important speech. Du Donghai, commander of the military area command pointed to the need of tackling economic construction as the central task, this requires that we strive for a long-term international peaceful environment and a good surrounding environment. Therefore, he said, we must persist in the independent foreign policy of peace, establish and develop friendly relations with all countries, including the US-led NATO member countries. But such relations are based on principles, that is, the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. Anyone who undermines these principles undermines world peace. Defending state sovereignty and national dignity and safeguarding world peace are the sacred mission of the People's Liberation Army, under the new circumstance, the People's Liberation Army should conscientiously implement President Jiang's important instructions, do a good job of making adequate preparation for regular strategies and coping with contingencies, and thus making contributions to promoting the establishment of a peaceful, stable, just and reasonable international new order.
