NATO Summit Ends Amid Protests

Leaders from the 19-member North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Sunday concluded a three day summit after discussions about Kosovo and the alliance's strategy in the 21st century.

The meeting, which opened in the Ronald Reagon International Trade Center amid protests near the venue, ended after separate NATO meetings with Yugoslavia neighboring states and with partnership countries.

On Saturday, more than 10,000 demonstrators protested against NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia in the park. They demanded that NATO start a peace negotiation process.

After a special meeting on Kosovo before they began to celebrate NATO's 50th anniversary Friday, NATO leaders vowed to continue its military strikes in Yugoslavia.

The leaders Saturday approved a new strategic concept that finally breaks the original "collective defense" doctrine and assumes broader functions to take actions outside alliance territory.

However, there were differences on the interpretation of the new strategic concept.

Analysts believe that NATO's new strategic concept will endanger the United Nations Charter and other international laws.
