following are excerpts of the report: In 1998, the
year of the Tiger, the Asian financial crisis and
the worst flood disaster brought great pressure
on China's economic development. The Party
Central Committee and the State Council led the
millions of people in the effort for the prosperity
of the country and finally achieved a 7.8 percent
economic growth rate.
In Shenzhen City, the forward position of
reform and opening up, Hou Liming, a national
eminent procuratorial officer and chief
procurator of the Nanshan District Procuratorate,
has become known for his skilful attack on "big
tigers"-highly positioned criminals. Between
1993 and 1998, the Nanshan District
Procuratorate under his leadership had placed
195 criminal cases related to the practice of
corruption and bribery involving 216 people on
file for investigation, retrieving economic losses
of nearly 1 billion yuan for the state and
collective.
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji and his
Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov held
talks in Moscow yesterday. The two premiers
exchanged views concretely and deeply on
mutual-relation and issues of common concern.
