BEIJING, June 1 -- Subaru will recall 1,002 vehicles in China due to problematic airbags, China's top quality watchdog said on Monday.

The recall involves 1,002 imported Subaru Impreza which were made between Feb. 2 of 2004 and June 15 of 2007, said the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

The recall is due to safety hazards resulting from defective front passenger airbags. Some airbags, when expanding, might cause an abnormal breakup of the airbags' gas generators, and hurt passengers. Subaru attributed the problem to its suppliers, according to the watchdog.

The company will replace gas generators of air bags of those recalled vehicles free of charge and the recall starts from Sept. 21.
