What successes has the Chinese navy achieved? Yin Zhuo, director of the Chinese PLA Navy Advisory Committee for Information Technology, visited People's Daily Online and had an online interaction with Chinese netizens.
PD Online: How do we build our navy power? What have we achieved to date?
Yin Zhuo: The Chinese navy is now developing from an inland and shallow-sea to an open-sea fleet. China's aircraft carrier has now entered service, along with new nuclear submarines, new ballistic missile submarines, and attack submarines, all of which has strongly enhanced China's open seas combat capability.
At the same time, we have to develop large amphibious ships. Aircraft carrier battle groups, nuclear submarines, and large amphibious ships will form the core of our modern naval combat capability.
However, the Chinese navy's 65 year history has left gaps. The pace of naval development cannot match the growth rate of our national maritime interests. In addition, compared with the naval power of developed Western countries, our navy's information technology lags far behind.
PD Online: How does the PLA Navy help to support the image of China as a responsible major country?
Yin Zhuo: The Chinese navy maintains a defensive strategy. We will not jeopardize the stability of neighboring countries, and we have made numreous and significant contributions to supporting a secure environment in the Asia-Pacific region. Our navy is a stable force to maintain peace.
At the same time, our naval commanders have regular high-level exchanges with neighboring countries, and Chinese naval vessels have visited neighboring ports and held joint exercises with them.
In addition, China and our neighboring countries face common threats and challenges such as regional and global terrorism and piracy, and large-scale humanitarian disaster relief missions like the search and rescue for Malaysian missing flight MH370.
