Guangzhou knife attack hero rewarded

GUANGZHOU, May 8 -- A migrant worker received 5,000 yuan (800 U.S. dollars) in cash Thursday from Guangzhou government, for tackling a man who attacked passers-by at a railway station two days ago.

Wang Fengwu is a migrant worker from northwest China's Gansu Province. He fought the assailant during the knife attack and helped the police capture him, according to the general management office of the city government.

The Samaritan Foundation of Guangzhou City issued Wang a "Guangzhou Samaritan Certificate" and awarded him 5,000 yuan on Thursday afternoon.

Another person who also fought back the attacker,but has now left Guangzhou, will also be rewarded, according to the city office.

Six people were injured in the attack Tuesday, and are all out of danger. The suspect did not carry an ID, and his identity is still unknown.

The incident is the latest of three recent attacks at crowded train stations in the past three months.

Three people were killed and 79 injured in an attack at a railway station in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, on April 30 and on March 1, knife-wielding assailants killed 29 civilians and injured another 143 at a railway station in the southwestern city of Kunming.
