WUHAN, March 9 -- A domestically made parafoil plane in reducing fog performed its first test at an airport of central China's Hubei Province on Saturday.

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with gliding parachute, manufactured by a subsidiary of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, was tested successfully in Shashi airport.

"Even in thick fog the UAV could fly on accurate route," said engineer Guo Haijun, who added the new plane has flexible wings with an aerodynamic structure, and innovative autonomous navigation control and launch technology.

China has been frequently shrouded by smog. But the traditional artificial fog dispersal methods are high in cost and risk.

Guo said the plane is easier to control and enjoys longer, smoother and safer flights.

"This UAV could be widely used in tackling smog in the future," an expert from the regional weather modification office said.

Artificial fog dispersal usually involves methods of spreading catalyzer in the air, artificial breeze and the heating up of the air. Using unmanned plane for spreading the catalyzer will reduce the risk and cut the costs.
