WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday called Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to reaffirm his administration's support for a two-state solution through peace talks with Israel.
Obama "reaffirmed that the United States stands ready to support the parties in achieving a just and lasting peace based on the two state solution, and will continue to work closely with the Palestinian Authority to achieve this goal," the White House said in a statement.
The president also commended Abbas for his "leadership and courage" in resuming final status negotiations with Israel.
The two sides agreed to begin formal final status negotiations within two weeks either in Israel or the Palestinian territories after their chief negotiators met in Washington on Monday and Tuesday to set the agenda and procedures for the negotiations.
And they agreed to put all the final status issues -- Jerusalem, security, the Jewish settlements, borders and refugees -- and all other issues on the table.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, whose intensive shuttle diplomacy restarted the peace talks, said on Tuesday that "our objective will be to achieve a final-status agreement over the course of the next nine months."
