Yang, who graduated from Chonnam National University with a bachelor of nursing science, began her military career as a second lieutenant in 1973. She has since served in various medical posts throughout the Army.
"As the nation's first female general, I will do my best for the military and the country. I hope this promotion will encourage other female officers," one-star General Yang said. Now South Korean has a total of 2,600 military women.
Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry announced promotions of five Army major generals to the rank of three-star general, seven Army brigadier generals to two-star generals.
In the Navy, five commodores were made rear admirals while four Air Force one-star officers were promoted to major generals.
