Chinese Premier Meets Indonesian Parliament Leaders

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met Thursday with Indonesian parliamentary leaders Amien Rais and Akbar Tanjung, stressing the need to further friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries and enhance contacts between the two countries' parliaments.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met Thursday with Indonesian parliamentary leaders Amien Rais and Akbar Tanjung, stressing the need to further friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries and enhance contacts between the two countries' parliaments.

Zhu, the first Chinese premier to have visited Indonesia in the past 11 years, arrived in Jakarta Wednesday for an official visit. Soon after his arrival, Zhu held talks with Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri.

The two leaders agreed to step up bilateral economic ties and strengthen cooperation in the field of politics.

During his meeting with Rais, chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly, and Tanjung, speaker of the House of Representative, Zhu described his current visit to Indoneisa as fruitful.

"No matter what changes would take place in the regional and interntional situation, China will remain a good friend to Indonesia and will support its efforts to maintain its soverienty, territorial integrity and economic recovery," Zhu said.

He noted, "We continue to support the two parliaments in promoting exchanges and achieving more contribution to the betterment of bialteral ties."

Rais and Danjung respectively expressed their warm welcome to Premier Zhu's visit to Indonesia and they both regarded his visit as a landmark in the bilateral relations.

They said the bilateral relations have witnessed satisfactory improvement through concerted efforts by both sides and boast a prosperous future.
