Putin Holds Telephone Talks with French, US Counterparts

French President Jacques Chirac and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Thursday reaffirmed the necessity of a "political strategy" and the emergency of humanitarian actions for Afghanistan, French presidency announced.

French President Jacques Chirac and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Thursday reaffirmed the necessity of a "political strategy" and the emergency of humanitarian actions for Afghanistan, French presidency announced.

The two presidents, who had a telephone talks earlier on Thursday evening, agreed that "a political strategy is necessary to complement the military operations on Afghanistan in order to let all political elements in the central Asian country to join forces in the future political solution," said the French presidency in a statement.

"They stressed the emergency to mobilize all energies to face up to the humanitarian situation by bringing assistance to not only refugees but also the whole of the Afghan people," said the statement.

They also considered the role of the United Nations essential in the perspective of the project of a resolution initiated by France and Britain that might be adopted next week in New York, it said.

Chirac and Putin agreed that "all should be done to resume the peace process in the Middle East," it added.

Chirac paid a one-day visit to Washington and New York on Tuesday where he has met with United States President George W. Bush and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. It was his second visit to the U.S. since the September 11 terrorist attacks. Putin is to visit Washington in coming days.

Earlier Thursday, Putin also held a telephone conversation with Bush, discussing the preparations for the upcoming summit scheduled in mid November, as well as cooperation in anti-terrorist fight.
