Waigaoqiao Shipyard in Shanghai, the largest shipbuilding base in China, went into operation Thursday with the start of construction of a 175,000-ton bulk freighter for a Hong Kong shipping company.

With a total investment of 3.2 billion yuan ( about 386 million U.S. dollars), the shipyard project broke ground in 1999 and has been regarded as one of China's key projects.

Located near the mouth of the Yangtze River in Pudong New District, the shipyard boasts an annual building capacity of 1.8 million tons in terms of deadweight tonnage, with 250,000-ton oil tankers and 150,000-ton freighters as its major products.

At a length of 289 meters and width of 45 meters, the bulk freighter under construction will be the largest of its kind China has ever built.
