Visiting Vice-President Hu Jintao and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar agreed to tighten links in different areas between their countries after a meeting Wednesday in Madrid.

Hu said Sino-Spanish relationship currently enjoys a good trend with frequent high-level exchanges, adding that Aznar's visit to China last year has accelerated the development of bilateral relations.

The Spanish Government upholds the one-China policy and seeks dialogue instead of confrontation on human rights differences, and such positions are highly appreciated by the Chinese Government, Hu said.

Hu also praised the Asia-Pacific strategic plan, mapped out by the Spanish government last year. The plan shows the strategic vision of Aznar and the high attention paid by Spain to developing relations with China, he said.

Hu expressed his willingness to continue to expand cooperation with Spain in new areas through new ways, calling for strengthening closer ties in culture, education and tourism to deepen the understanding and friendship between the two countries.

After Spain assumes its rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) next year, the Chinese Government is willing to strengthen its cooperation with Spain and support all the activities.

For his part, Aznar said that China's position in the Asia-Pacific and the world is increased and plays an important role. Therefore, promoting ties with China has become one significant diplomatic focus of Spain.

The Spanish Government is willing to work together with China to further cooperation in different areas, he added.

Hu and Aznar also reached agreement on anti-terrorism.

Also on Wednesday, Spanish King Juan Carlos I met with Hu at the king's palace. The two discussed bilateral ties and international issues of common concern.

Hu arrived here on Wednesday for a two-day official visit to Spain. He will fly to Barcelona on Thursday.
