At least 547 people were killed and 3,299 others injured in a 7.2-magnitude earthquake, which jolted northwestern Turkey on Friday, the Crisis Center of the Prime Ministry announced on the morning of November 16. The center said that over 10,000 people have been working hard to rescue those still buried in rubble. A total of 715 buildings were destroyed in the killer quake which was centered in the Duzce town of Bolu province, about 200 kilometers west of Ankara, capital of Turkey. After two major earthquakes in the past three months, terrified residents of the northwestern Turkish town of Duzce were packing up and leaving, unable to face the idea that the ground could once again shake around them. The life for the residents in Duzce is growing more and more difficult with adverse weather conditions. Without enough tents to go around, many people in Duzce had to spend the last four nights sleeping outside amid sub-freezing temperatures. On August 17, a 7.4-magnitude quake hit western Turkey, killing at least 17,000 people, injuring over 40,000 others and making 500,000 people homeless. |
