US President Bill Clinton plans to postpone by one week his two-day visit to Greece on November 10. The Athens News Agency (ANA) Wednesday quoted well-informed sources as saying that Clinton, due to arrive in Athens on Saturday for his first visit to Greece, was postponing the visit to November 19-20 to avoid protests marking the November 17, 1973 students' uprising that was instrumental in toppling the military junta in Greece at that time. The postponement was being contemplated so that Clinton's visit would not coincide with the Athens Polytechnic uprising commemoration events scheduled for this weekend, the sources said. The same sources said that an official announcement would be made in Washington later. The demonstrations, which usually last for three days to the November 17 anniversary, culminate with a protest march to the US embassy in Athens. Some organizations in Greece have decided to extend this year's demonstrations to five days in order to coincide with Clinton's visit. To protest against the US policy on the Balkan region and Washington's failure in helping solve the Cyprus problem, Greeks have begun a wave of demonstrations in downtown Athens and outside the US embassy A number of home-made bombs also exploded in the past in car showcases and clothing shops to protest against Clinton's visit. The latest home-made bomb explosion, which occurred early Wednesday damaged three cars in a Suzuki-car dealer's display room in central Athens. |
