France captain Zinedine Zidane has won the Golden Ball award for the World Cup's best player, despite his red card in Sunday's defeat to Italy in the final. Zidane polled 2012 points in the vote by journalists covering the tournament, ahead of Italian Fabio Cannavaro (1977 points) and Andrea Pirlo (715 points).

The 2006 World Cup final will be remembered more for a headbutt than the fact Italy won the world's most desirable sporting prize for the fourth time, press reports suggested yesterday.

The month-long festival of sporting excellence ended on the July 9th in Germany with Italy holding up the World Cup Trophy for the fourth time. The World Cup is a football feast and the performances of ten key figures have decided success and failure.
