Emergency in Pakistan

Canadian Foreign Minister Deplores Coup in Pakistan

Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy October 13 deplored the "action by Pakistan's military", which ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Tuesday.

Axworthy said in an announcement that he has been invited to a special meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group slated for Monday in London.

"Clearly, the coup calls into question Pakistan's participation in Commonwealth meetings, including the upcoming Commonwealth heads of government meeting," he said.

The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs has already recommended the 1300 Canadians living in Pakistan stay indoors and travellers reconsider their planned trips to Pakistan.
