Rufino, an Angolan volunteer, was making a phone call to a foreigner in self-quarantine at Guangzhou Headquarter International Hotel, Huangpu district, Guangzhou of south China’s Guangdong province.

Rufino is a fourth-year student majoring in computer science at South China University of Technology. On April 16, he became a volunteer in his community.

Rufino said after the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, he received good services from Huangpu district and wanted to do his part to give back to the community.

Every morning at 9 a.m., Rufino wears a protective suit to deliver breakfast to each quarantine room and takes away the trash. “I love what I’m doing, and I think I can do it well,” said Rufino.

After delivering breakfast, Rufino returns to his office, making phone calls to foreigners staying at the hospital for a 14-day quarantine.

“We need to do our best to help each other and create a healthy environment for everyone. We are making contributions to protect the safety of citizens in Guangzhou, as well as people in China and the whole world,” Rufino said.

Rufino’s contribution has been recognized by people working with him. “He has played an important role in building trust between us and foreign residents, especially those from Africa,” said Zhang Wuqiong, head of the working team which Rufino belongs to.

"I love Guangzhou, and I regard the city as my second home. I hope everyone is healthy!" said Rufino.

He believes his identity as an African and his proficiency in English can be useful in explaining the city's prevention and control measures to foreigners visiting Guangzhou during this period.

As of April 17, Huangpu district has transferred 3,030 immigrants, including 2,063 Chinese and 967 foreigners. With 816 people currently in centralized isolation, strengthening communication with foreigners and providing necessary psychological counseling have become a new challenge for the community and isolation hotels.
