U.S. becomes country with most COVID-19 cases

NEW YORK, March 26 (Xinhua) -- The United States reported 82,404 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of 6 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time on Thursday (2200 GMT), according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The United States has surpassed China to become the country with most COVID-19 cases in the world, according to the CSSE.

The nationwide tally grew over 10,000 cases in less than five hours. The state of New York has become the epicenter of the country's outbreak with 37,802 cases reported. New Jersey and California have reported 6,876 and 3,802 cases, respectively, according to the center.

DUBLIN -- Another ten people died from COVID-19 in Ireland while 255 new cases of the coronavirus infection were confirmed in the country on Thursday, according to the Department of Health.

Thursday's numbers of new deaths and cases were both new highs in a single day since the outbreak of the disease in the country at the end of last month, according to the tallies from the health department.

To date, there have been 19 COVID-19-related deaths and 1,819 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland, the health department said in a statement.

JERUSALEM -- A total of 324 people in Israel tested positive for the COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 2,693, the Israeli Ministry of Health said.

LONDON -- The British government said on Thursday that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country has risen to 11,658 as single-day deaths topped 100 for the first time since the outbreak of the disease.

The British Department of Health and Social Care said a total of 115 people had died of COVID-19 in 24 hours, bringing the tally to 578. The number of confirmed cases registered an increase of 2,129 on Thursday from 9,529 on Wednesday.

A total of 104,866 people have been tested in the country, with 93,208 negative results.

ATHENS -- The total confirmed COVID-19 infections in Greece has reached 892, including 26 deaths, Prof. Sotirios Tsiodras, coronavirus control spokesman of the Health Ministry, announced on Thursday.

Since Wednesday, authorities diagnosed 71 new cases and reported 4 more deaths, he told a press conference here.

At the moment 57 patients were treated in intensive care units and 42 have been discharged from hospitals.
