MANILA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- A total 1,626,309 Chinese mainland tourists visited the Philippines from January to November 2019, a 30.02 percent increase from the same period in 2018, data from the Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) showed on Saturday.

Philippine Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said in a statement released Friday night said a total of 684,063 foreign tourists visited the Philippines in November, a 21.25 percent rise from the number of foreign tourists that visited this tropical country in November 2018.

The double-digit monthly posting brought to 7,484,115 the total visitor arrivals from overseas from January to November 2019, which is 15.58 percent higher than the total for the same period in the previous year, she added.

International visitor arrivals in the country continued to increase sharply last November, a momentum that indicated another record-high finish for the tourism industry by the end of 2019, Romulo-Puyat said.

She said the country's hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games helped boost last year's upward trend in monthly foreign visitor figures that began to shoot up in October with 638,549 from September 606,553.

According to the DOT, the data on international visitor arrivals are based on the arrival cards filled out by foreign nationals and collected by the country's Bureau of Immigration.

The DOT said South Korea remains the country's top source market with 176,185 visitors, a whopping 37.71 percent increase from last year's 127,935 arrivals for November 2019 while the Chinese mainland comes in second with 126,785, a 30.02 percent rise compared to the previous year.

The DOT has yet to release the total number of foreign tourists that visited the Philippines in 2019. But the department said in December that the number has already breached the eight million mark.

The Philippine government is hoping to reach its target of 8.2 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2019, a million higher than in 2018.
