East China customs seizes ivory products in painting scrolls

(Xinhua)    16:51, January 17, 2020

JINAN, Jan. 17 -- Qingdao Customs in east China's Shandong Province said Friday that it has seized six ivory products on a flight bound from Tokyo to Qingdao Liuting International Airport.

The ivory products, weighing about 158 grams, were inside calligraphy and painting scrolls, and were not declared, the customs said.

The Chinese government suspended imports of ivory and all ivory products in 2015 and ended commercial processing and sales of ivory at the end of 2017 as part of its commitment to protecting wild animals.

The ivory products have been temporarily confiscated by the customs for further investigation.
