2020 Oscar shortlists for nine categories released

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released on Monday the shortlists in consideration for the 92nd Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, in nine categories, including International Feature, Documentary Feature and Animated Short Film.

Ten films to advance in the International Feature Film category include Czech Republic's "The Painted Bird," Estonia's "Truth and Justice," France's "Les Miserables," Hungary's "Those Who Remained," North Macedonia's "Honeyland," Poland's "Corpus Christi," Russia's "Beanpole," Senegal's "Atlantics," South Korea's "Parasite" and Spain's "Pain and Glory."

A record-breaking total of 93 films were submitted in the category. Earlier this year, the Academy's Board of Governors voted to rename the Foreign Language Film category to International Feature Film and expanded the shortlist of finalists from nine to ten films.

Fifteen films, including "American Factory," "Apollo 11", "The Cave" and "For Sama," will advance in the Documentary Feature category. A total of 159 features were submitted for consideration in the category this year.

Ten films including "Kitbull," "Hair Love" and "The Physics of Sorrow" will advance in the Animated Short Film category. A total of 92 films qualified in the category.

Other six categories with shortlists unveiled include Documentary Short Subject, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Original Song, Visual Effects and Live Action Short Film.

Nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards will be announced on January 13, 2020. The 92nd Academy Awards will be held on Feb. 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
