Various e-book reading applications including WeChat Read and NetEase Cloud Read are winning an increasing popularity among Chinese readers.

In early 2019, the film The Wandering Earth, which was adapted from Chinese science-fiction writer Liu Cixin’s novel of the same name, aroused a sensation of sci-fi movies and fictional content in China. Many people read the novel on their mobile phone software after watching the blockbuster.

Last year, China’s digital reading market reached 25.5 billion yuan (about $3.8 billion), up 19.6 percent year on year, according to the industry report which was published in April.

According to the report, of all the 1.4 billion people in the Chinese population, 432 million read digital publications on electronic devices in 2018. They read an average of 12.4 online books per person last year, and almost 70 percent said that they were willing to pay for the digital publications.

It can be expected that with the advent of 5G networks, AI technology and other high-level technologies, portable equipment as well as smart home appliances will all become popular. For this reason, Chinese readers will surely have better digital reading experiences for the years to come.
