Is We Media a reliable career path?

By Zhao Tong (People's Daily Online)    09:41, November 09, 2019

Recently, many young people have found career opportunities on We Media platforms. A large number of successful cases means many now regard "We Media" as a future career development channel, while some people expect to become rich and famous overnight.

45.6% of respondents have used or are using We Media

Last week, the Social Survey Center of China Youth Daily and online survey platform wenjuan.com surveyed 1,870 people aged 18 to 35, showing that 72.0 percent of those asked said they knew people using We Media, while 45.6 percent have used it themselves. 52.8 percent of the respondents have specific goals or plans for career development through We Media platforms.

Luo Ziwen, a professor at the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, pointed out that with the development of communication technology and the change of communication ecology, We Media is almost all-pervasive and has an increasing impact on society. More young people have devoted themselves to the We Media industry, either because of personal interests or career pursuit. With the development of society, people's individual needs are increasingly diverse. It's predicted that We Media still has more space for growth as a sunrise industry.

65.4 percent of respondents believed that they should develop a specific professional skill

"Those using We Media should pay attention to hot spots and traffic, which is not easy. I like to write something simple and don't want to spend too much time and energy on it," said Qu Jia(pseudonym), a postgraduate student from Chengdu. She believed that people using We Media should be enthusiastic, to better adapt to the endless hot spots and changing trends. In addition, people are supposed to have professional knowledge and related experience, otherwise progression may be difficult.

In the survey, 65.4 percent of the respondents said that people who want to have a career in We Media should focus on developing a particular professional skill. 62.7 percent of them believe that they should keep the spirit of innovation and keep up with changing trends. 51.8 percent said it is essential to establish risk awareness in terms of career outlook. Only 35.0 percent of the young people surveyed thought self-discipline should be strengthened and social responsibility should be enhanced.

Luo suggested that people who want to have a career in We Media should first accumulate professional knowledge. In an information-overloaded society, only expert and unique information will impress, and only long-term dissemination can maintain a stable fan group. Secondly, a personal style should be formed. This includes, but is not limited to, interface, language and interaction mode. Only with a unique style can it stand out and have core competitiveness. In addition, people should abide by discipline and the law, and maintain a social conscience.
