First LMC youth training program on nuclear energy concludes

(People's Daily Online)    17:47, October 18, 2019

The 2019 Nuclear Energy Industry Youth Training Program for Lancang-Mekong Countries successfully concluded in Shenzhen, China, on Sept. 6, 2019.

Starting from July 13, the program was the first of this type under the mechanism of Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC).

A total of 30 governmental officials, scientific researchers, and young students from Lancang/Mekong countries attended the training program. Chinese officials and experts provided more than 40 lectures. On the sidelines, participants also toured around Beijing, Chengdu, Wuhan, Qinshan and Shenzhen for field research.

Beijing was the first leg of the journey for all trainees. They arrived at China's prestigious Tsinghua University for 28 days of theoretical learning. During their stay in Beijing, they visited China Nuclear Industry 23 Construction Co. and communicated with experts from the company on energy policies and laws, frontier nuclear science and technology, and nuclear project development and management.

In Chengdu, the home of pandas and hot pots, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) introduced the application of nuclear power in medical treatment and sterilization to all participants.

Then, they moved to east China's Zhejiang Province to visit the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, China's first independently-designed pressurized water reactor rated at 300 MWe. The immersive experience helped trainees eliminate any fears of nuclear power.

In Shenzhen, the strength of CNNC's whole industry chain was presented through visits of its wholly-owned companies dealing in imports and exports, overseas projects, nuclear medical technology and other non-nuclear sectors.

At the graduation ceremony, participants from different countries gave positive remarks on LMC's key role in promoting the economic and social development of all nations. They also expressed their expectations for more cooperation on nuclear power among Lancang-Mekong countries.

The program was held by China Zhongyuan Engineering Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNNC. It enhanced the pragmatic cooperation among Lancang-Mekong countries and injected dynamism into the future development of LMC.
