(Xinhua)    08:07, October 11, 2019

HAIKOU, Oct. 10 -- Cambodia on Thursday opened a consulate general in Haikou, capital of China's southernmost island province of Hainan.

It is the first consular mission set up in the Chinese resort island since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

Khek Caimealy Sysoda, Cambodian ambassador to China, said at the opening ceremony that the newly-launched consulate general would further promote the exchanges in tourism, culture, investment and trade between the two countries.

Shen Xiaoming, governor of Hainan, said the launch of the consulate general demonstrates the great importance that both countries attach to deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership.

Besides issuing visas to Chinese tourists, the consulate general will help Cambodia attract more Chinese investors, according to Ung Vantha, Cambodian consul general in Haikou.

China is the largest source of foreign visitors to Cambodia. About 1.7 million Chinese tourists visited Cambodia in the first eight months of 2019, up 33 percent year on year, according to the Cambodian Tourism Ministry.
