EU to provide Jordan with 549 mln USD in loan before year end

AMMAN, Oct. 7 -- The European Union (EU) is going ahead with efforts to provide Jordan with 500 million euros (549 million U.S. dollars) soft loan before the end of the year, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini said Monday.

She made the remarks at a press conference with Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi in Amman, where they looked into ties and regional developments.

The Jordanian official voiced appreciation for the EU's support to Jordan's development programmes. He said the loan has been approved awaiting endorsement.

The EU official said the EU will continue supporting Jordan, voicing appreciation for the country's role in attaining peace.

On the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, she stressed that the EU supports the two-state solution as the sole path to end the conflict.

She voiced appreciation of Jordan's role in overseeing and protecting the Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

The talks also covered the need for a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

Also Monday, King Abdullah II of Jordan received the EU official, where he expressed Jordan's appreciation for the support provided by the EU in a number of fields.
