WASHINGTON, Oct. 2 -- The U.S. Navy is set to commission its new Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Cincinnati on Saturday in Gulfport, Mississippi, the Pentagon said Wednesday.

The new ship, hull numbered LCS 20, is 128.5m long, 38.5m tall and displaces 3,200 tons at full load.

The U.S.S. Cincinnati is the fifth ship to honor Ohio's third largest city.

The LCS is a maneuverable, lethal and adaptable ship designed to conduct multi-tasking missions in coastal regions.

The LCS class consists of two variants -- the Freedom variant and the Independence variant, designed and built by two industry teams. The Freedom variant, with odd-numbered hulls, is led by Lockheed Martin, and the Independence variant, with even-numbered hulls, is led by Austal USA.

The U.S. Navy will also christen Virginia-class nuclear attack submarine U.S.S. Oregon on Saturday in Groton, Connecticut.
