DPRK asks U.S. to drop hostile policy toward it

(Xinhua)    13:07, October 01, 2019

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 30 -- A representative of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Monday asked the United States to drop its hostile policy against Pyongyang.

The key to consolidating peace and stability and achieving development on the Korean Peninsula is in the full implementation of the DPRK-U.S. Joint Statement agreed and adopted at the historic DPRK-U.S. summit held in Singapore in June 2018, Kim Song, DPRK's UN ambassador, told the General Debate of the UN General Assembly.

More than a year has passed since the adoption of the June 12 Joint Statement. However, the relations between the DPRK and the United States have made little progress and the situation on the Korean Peninsula has not come out of the vicious cycle of increased tension, said Kim.

He blamed the impasse on "the political and military provocations perpetrated by the U.S., resorting to the anachronistic hostile policy against the DPRK."

He noted that DPRK top leader Kim Jong Un has asked the United States to put aside its current method of calculation and approach the DPRK with a new one.

"Assuming that the U.S. has had enough time to find out a calculation method that can be shared with us, we expressed our willingness to sit with the United States for comprehensive discussion of the issues we have deliberated so far," Kim Song said.

"It depends on the U.S. whether the DPRK-U.S. negotiations will become a window of opportunity or an occasion that will hasten the crisis," he said.

Kim Song also said the historic inter-Korean declarations which greatly excited the people of the two Koreas as well as the international community a year ago are now in standstill.

The introduction of the latest offensive weapons and the U.S.-South Korean joint military exercises targeting the DPRK "constitute flagrant violation and challenge" to the agreement in military field on completely halting hostile acts against the other side and refraining from building up armed forces for the implementation of the Panmunjom Declaration, he added.

The improvement of inter-Korean relations can only be achieved when the South Korean authorities put an end to big-power worship and the policy of dependence on foreign forces, and implement the inter-Korean declarations in good faith, the DPRK official said.
