TIANJIN, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Li Zhanshu has called for strengthening and improving local legislation to step up economic and social development as well as reforms.

Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks at a meeting on legislative work in provincial-level people's congresses held in north China's Tianjin Municipality on Wednesday and Thursday.

Li called for more efforts to build a well-constructed system of laws and norms and improve local legislative mechanisms to generate joint forces to push forward the country's legislation work.

He stressed that local legislation should cater to the new phase of economic development, and supply-side structural reform as well as high-quality economic development should be promoted through lawmaking.

He also underlined legislative work on multiple aspects including public wellbeing, social governance, ecology and environmental protection.

Wang Chen, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over the meeting and delivered a speech at the closed meeting. Wang said strengthening legislative work in provincial-level people's congresses is of great significance to advance law-based governance.
