(People's Daily Overseas New Media)    16:37, March 05, 2019

The commercial deployment of 5G technology, which is expected to bring 35 trillion yuan economic output and 3 million jobs, shines at this year’s Two Sessions as an important technological highlight.

The world has been eagerly awaiting the popularization of ultra-fast 5G mobile networks, which will make things like appliances, cars, and televisions smarter as well as increase the speed of the internet. During this year’s Two Sessions – China’s most important political meetings, the technology has not only been used for the first time by the official media center to assist news broadcasting, but delegates have also taken advantage of the super-fast technology to improve their work.

The Internet-of-Things (IOT) will be greatly influenced by this booming technology, as well as communication, TV, and other industries, Lei Jun, the founder of Xiaomi told reporters on the sidelines of the political meeting. On Sunday, the tech giant unveiled its 5G smartphone.

Shanghai Unicom is actively exploring vertical industry applications and mining various industry items including technology, transportation, manufacturing, and medical care. By the end of May, thousands of 5G sites will be set up in the city, which will lay a solid foundation for the formal commercialization of 5G.

In terms of intelligence manufacturing, 5G will improve data sharing, interconnections, and intelligent decision making. In the inspection of power supply lines and oil pipelines, 5G will help achieve unmanned and standardized work in harsh environments. Recently, the construction of a 5G base station in an unmanned pilot test area was completed to support the launch of the unmanned vehicle test in this area.

Specifically, the economic output directly driven by 5G commercial deployment is estimated to reach 10.6 trillion Chinese yuan ($1.6 trillion), which could directly add as much as 3.3 trillion yuan from 2020 to 2025.

In terms of indirect contribution, the economic outcome will be about 24.8 trillion yuan, with about 8.4 trillion yuan in economic growth during this time period. 5G is also expected to create more than 3 million jobs by the end of 2025, according to a 5G-themed whitepaper published by China Academy of Information and Communications Technology in 2017.
