823 million Chinese people sent and received virtual red envelops on Chinese New Year’s Eve and during the first five days of the Spring Festival on WeChat, a Chinese multi-purpose social media mobile application, according to a report released by the application’s parent company Tencent.
The number of messages sent through the platform was up 64.2 percent from a year before during this period of time. People born in the 1990s were the group that had sent the most messages, shared the most contents, and sent the most emojis. In addition, they also sent and received the most virtual red envelopes.
Beijing, Guangzhou and Chongqing were the hottest three cities in terms of the virtual red envelope game, the report said.
A total of 963 million steps were made by users tracking their motion data on WeChat, growing 50 percent from a year ago.
In addition, the time spent by the users on reading on the platform added up to 15.1 million hours between Feb.3 to 8.
