Girl travels 2,000 km to tie the knot with her soldier husband

Wang Mei, 25 and her bridegroom, Zhang Jinyuan, 31, finally had their wedding on Jan. 13 on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, after the bride traveled over 2,000 km across five mountains, overcoming numerous difficulties, such as altitude sickness and carsickness, for the special day.

The couple registered as a married couple last April, but Zhang was summoned back to his post in Yumai, southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, several days later, before they had a chance to have their wedding.

To realize their dream of having a wedding, Wang asked her employer for leave in January to visit her husband. “I can meet there since he can’t travel home for the Spring Festival,” Wang said.

She brought many snacks and hotpot condiments with her as well some medicine including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment to give to the comrades of her husband, who works as a captain at a border area protecting an entry point to the nation some 5,000 meters above sea level.

Zhang, who was worried about the safety of his wife, contacted her every hour after Wang landed in Lhasa, as he knows the way to the border area is very dangerous.

“I was a little worried that things would be limited, but my husband and the other soldiers, as well the local residents, tried their best to make it a fabulous wedding ceremony,” Wang said.

One local resident even lent Wang a sacred Tibet-style wedding dress, and the soldiers decorated their homes with balloons. The wedding on the snow-topped mountain was a happy occasion and everything went smoothly.

“I totally understand my husband’s duty and will support him with all my passion,” Wang said. “China have thousands of military couples just like us. I’m not alone.”
