Alibaba builds China’s largest online public welfare platform

(People's Daily Online)    14:05, January 28, 2019

E-commerce giant Alibaba has built China’s largest online public welfare platform. A total of 430 million people participated in online philanthropic activities held by the conglomerate last year, making over 7.9 billion donations, a daily average of 20 million.

Raising a total of 440 million yuan, Alibaba helped over 8.7 million people last year, according to the annual bill of public welfare released by the company on Monday.

More than 300 million donations were made during China’s largest online shopping festival, “Double 11”, by 900,000 online shops and 113 million consumers, setting a record for most donations made in a single day.

Thousands of organizations on Alibaba’s platforms have used Taobao, the company’s e-commerce site, as a major channel to raise donations. In today’s world, the internet and digital technology are empowering public welfare with new potential.

Thanks to the fund Alibaba raised, over 56 million free lunches were provided for students living in rural areas, and 3.1 million impoverished households were secured with insurance. The donations also funded 249 schools, benefiting a total of over 160,000 children.

Alibaba’s public welfare projects have not only helped people in China, but also those living in Sudan, Ethiopia and Myanmar among other countries. China’s online public welfare campaign has already started to benefit the world.

The average donation made on Alibaba’s platform was only 0.046 yuan, and 55 percent of all donations were worth no more than 1 yuan. Although these seem like trivial deeds, they built up to the huge donation of 440 million yuan, showing that mass participation is key for charitable projects.
