Beijing sets a 2020 environmental improvement goal

(Ecns.cn)    07:54, September 18, 2018

The Beijing municipal government released a new environmental plan, in its continued bid to improve the Chinese capital city's air quality. By 2020, the city wants to have cut by 25 percent the heavy pollution days' ratio and by 30 percent the emissions of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds.

New statics showed that among the pollutant sources of Beijing's fine particles (PM), moving and dusting sources have increased, while coal and industrial sources have decreased.

By 2020, Beijing also hopes to shift cargo transportation from road to rail, realizing a 10 percent increase in railway transportation. In addition, 400,000 environmentally friendly energy vehicles will be put on the road in downtown Beijing and sub CBDs.

Multiple surveillance technologies will be adopted for dust control. The dusting source is expected to decrease by 30 percent, when compared with 2017 levels.

Key enterprises in the petrochemical industry are encouraged to decrease their annual emissions by 10 percent. A total of 1000 small-sized companies will be closed.

Clean energy consumption is another goal for Beijing. The plain areas of the city are expected to realize the "no-coal" goal by the end of 2018. The rural mountainous areas of the city will adopt the clean energy consumption plan from 2019. By 2020, the proportion of high-quality energy is to increase to 95 percent.
