Big data helps freshmen find roommates

The Nanjing University in Jiangsu Province has introduced big data to help freshmen find their ideal roommates with similar living habits and interests, reports the Beijing News.

The university conducted a survey among all new students this month, asking them about their schedules, personal hygiene habits and various interests. From there, computer algorithms were then used to match students with their most compatible roommates.

"A test of the program this past year found a 10% increase overall satisfaction scores," said Guo Yamin, a faculty member in charge of enrollment.

"Because students put an emphasis on personalities, if roommates have very different schedules, habits and interests, it will definitely impact their relationships moving forward in their college life," said Guo.

However, opponents of the program suggest students should be able to learn how to adapt to people with different personalities, suggesting the program may weaken their overall communication skills.
