Yangtze River Stories (13) China’s Optic Valley shines in Wuhan

Sitting in East Lake Hi-tech Development Zone in Wuhan, capital of central China’s Hubei province, is a national innovation demonstration zone called, China’s Optic Valley, which is undergoing rapid development after gathering $58-billion-worth of advanced optoelectronic techniques.

It is the largest domestic R&D base and producer of optical devices, having produced China’s first optical fiber, first optical transmission, and first femtosecond laser and it continues to welcome newer and more advanced optical technology.

For example, Yangtze Memory Technology Corp has attracted more than $23 billion investment, and is now expected to mass produce the country’s first 32-layer 3D flash memory chips with independent intellectual property rights by the end of this year.

Another leading company in Optic Valley is FiberHome, the Chinese cradle of optical telecommunication technologies. It is now one of the largest companies in China to provide fiber optic solutions to enterprises and individuals, letting customers enjoy ultra-high-speed, ultra-high capacity, and ultra-long-distance telecommunications.

“We have invested 10 percent of our annual sales revenue into research and development, breaking the world record for optical communications four times in the past five years,” said Yu Shaohua, a vice president of FiberHome.

Besides these two industries, the high-tech development zone is also a center in China for the R&D and production of mobile phone panels, and some of the companies have also developed mature memory chip businesses.

The huge market potential in Wuhan has attracted a lot of projects. Since March this year, a batch of projects with a total investment of $15 billion went into operation. The local government has also introduced a series of regulations to simplify the application process, in order to optimize the business environment. For example, processing time of applications will be reduced to 100 working days by 2018, and will further decrease to 90 days by June 2019. Wuhan has also launched an array of projects to attract domestic and overseas graduates, which is expected to provide benefit to the whole society.
