Canis aureus, a new species of canine, was spotted for the very first time in China on July 7, thepaper.cn reported.
Researchers from the Tibet Biodiversity Image Conservation (TBIC) had filmed the creature roaming through the Himalayas, in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, on the same date.
The animal was confirmed to be a completely new canine species by Li Sheng, a researcher at the School of Life Sciences, Peking University.
It’s the first time that the species has been proven to exist in the wild, Li noted, adding that the discovery indicated more scientific investigation was necessary to explore unknown animal and plant species in the area.
