Light aircraft missing with ten onboard in Kenya

(Xinhua)    08:33, June 06, 2018

NAIROBI, June 5 (Xinhua) -- A light aircraft with ten people onboard, which was flying from Kitale town in western Kenya to Nairobi, went missing on Tuesday, the country's aviation authorities have confirmed.

Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) Director General Gilbert Kibe said the Cessna C208 flight was last seen on radar at 2:02 p.m.

Sources within the aviation industry said the aircraft is suspected to have crashed at round 5 p.m., about 40 km after taking off from Kitale to Nairobi.

A search and rescue team has been dispatched but sources said the operation has been hampered by poor visibility in the area, which was not disclosed.

Kibe said a search and rescue mission was launched Tuesday evening following reports it had gone missing.

Preliminary reports showed the plane had ten people on board -- eight passengers and two crew. The identities of the passengers were not made public.

Industry sources said the aircraft had earlier flown to Homa Bay in Western Kenya and Maasai Mara in southwest Kenya and was making last journey from Kitale to the city when it went missing.

Emergency service providers at Wilson Airport and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport said "we're mobilized to help tracing the missing caravan."
