The Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana, Legon, on Friday organized the 17th Chinese Bridge Preliminary competition for non-Chinese college students.

The contest aims at creating a platform for foreign Chinese language learners to showcase their ability, inspire their interest, support and passion for the Chinese language and culture.

This year’s event in Ghana has the theme of “One World, One Family”. Ten university students took part in the competition.

Duncan Acorlor, a student of the University of Ghana, emerged overall winner after three rounds of contest in writing tests, speeches, talent shows and answering of questions from the panel of judges.

Acorlor won an all-expense paid trip to China to represent Ghana in the global contest with other selected Chinese language learners from various universities in dozens of countries later in the year.

He told Xinhua that he looked forward to a fruitful global contest in China.

"I will be going to China to represent Ghana in the world competition against nationals from different parts of the world and I will need the support of each and every Ghanaian to help me come home with the first prize in China as well,” Acorlor said.

Jacqueline Sekyi, who was the runner-up, earned a chance to visit China to observe the international challenge.
