China launches first press exchange project for SCO countries

(People's Daily Online)    16:25, April 03, 2018

Twelve journalists from five SCO countries attended the opening ceremony of the SCO’s media exchange project in Beijing on Tuesday, with experts calling the event “a remarkable proposal".

It is the first time for those journalists, who come from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus, to join SCO’s communication project together.

Li Minggang, deputy director of the Department of Information, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed the meeting. According to Li, Shanghai Cooperation Organization has been set up for almost 18 years since 2001. All the member nations have been working jointly under the “Shanghai Spirit”. “It is quite necessary that journalists from our neighbor countries meet and support each other and then play a fundamental role as cultural messengers in exchanges among SCO countries,” Li said.

Sadyk Akizhanov, head of International News Agency of Kazakhstan’s bureau in China addresses the ceremony.

Echoing Li, Sadyk Akizhanov, head of International News Agency of Kazakhstan’s bureau in China, told People’s daily Online that it is a very good opportunity for them to communicate and work with other journalists from SCO countries.

Sadyk further noted, “China is entering a new developing era. Both Chinese people’s lifestyles and thoughts are shifting rapidly. We should seize the chance to witness China’s significant historic moment. We should also strive to obtain more first-hand materials in various aspects and deal with them objectively so that we could help people know more about China.”

“I have lived in Beijing for four years and have a basic understanding of China. But this time I want to go beyond common sense and try to find out deep reasons for some superficial phenomena through this project,” he added.

SCO summit 2018 will be held in June in Qingdao, east China. All the journalists will stay in China for three months, during which they will take courses in China’s national conditions; they will also travel around China to experience lives in different regions.
