China’s Foreign Ministry refutes FCCC allegations again

By Fang Tian (People's Daily Online)    15:09, February 02, 2018

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying answered questions from the media at a regular press conference on Jan. 30.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying refuted the alleged “non-favorable” working conditions for foreign reporters for the second time at the regular press conference on Thursday when a “well-prepared” Japanese journalist brought up the false report.

The Japanese journalist from Sankei Shimbun, a daily industrial and economic newspaper in Japan, brought up the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of China’s (FCCC) annual report criticizing the working conditions for foreign journalists in China, agreeing with the contents of the report and hoping that the Chinese side would make some improvements.

Referring to the journalist by name, the only journalist who has met problems, Hua suggested some self-reflection and self-examinatio, as the majority of foreign journalists and press can carry out work and coverage smoothly in China.

She also stressed that all foreign journalists are friends of China, and they should act as bridges between China and the world, adding that China welcomes and supports all the positive efforts made by the foreign correspondents.

The day before, a foreign journalist asked the spokesperson for comments on the FCCC’s annual report, and not a single foreign journalist at the conference raised their hand to show that their working conditions are “non-favorable.”

The journalist, assumed to be a member of the FCCC, showed up on Thursday to announce the position on the issue on behalf of Sankei Shimbun, which was absent the day before. However, as Hua said before, FCCC members or its report in no way reflect the genuine opinion of the almost 600 foreign journalists in China.
