China is planning to green 70% of all trips to be made in the downtown area of its major cities by 2020, said a document on green commuting issued by the country’s Ministry of Transport on Dec. 6.

According to the document, positive achievements have been made during the last five years. However, China’s transport development is still over-extensive, with huge space to improve its structure and green commuting.

The country is striving to realize a green transport system featuring scientific structure, eco-friendliness, low carbon emission, and high efficiency by 2020, the document said.

The number of new energy and clean energy vehicles is expected to reach 600,000, and the standardized ratios of inland vessels and freight vehicles will be improved to 70% and 80%, respectively.

In addition, carbon dioxide emissions in transport industry will be reduced by 7% compared with that in 2015, according to the document.

The country is also planning to establish a batch of demonstration infrastructure projects focused on green commuting, and implement a series of ecological restoration projects.
