Xi’an university’s unmanned intelligent vehicles flexibly avoid obstacles

By Zhang Huan (People's Daily Online)    13:38, December 06, 2017

Unmanned intelligent vehicles developed by the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robots at Xi’an Jiaotong University, can flexibly avoid obstacles, said Zheng Nanning, a professor at the university, China News reported on Dec. 5.

The vehicles can move, make turns, and avoid pedestrians and pass bicycles on their own.

Visible light sensors, laser sensors, millimeter-wave sensors, and an inertial navigation system enable the vehicles in autonomous perception, intelligent decision-making, and planning and motion control.

“At present, there are still challenges for self-driving vehicles to adapt to the complicated traffic environment. We will continue to improve their sensing technology and computing abilities,” said Zheng.

Zheng added that the safety performance of self-driving vehicles in a complex traffic environment will also be taken into consideration in their future research.
