Russia Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday started his two-day official visit to China following the successful closing of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, in an effort to deepen the two nations’ economic and cultural cooperation.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Prikhodko announced on Tuesday that Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Russian prime minister would hold discussions on bilateral relations in the areas of economy, innovation, and cultural exchange. Medvedev will also facilitate the signing of a memorandum between Novatek, Russia’s largest independent natural gas producer, and its Chinese counterparts. It is the sixth meeting between the Russian prime minister and the Chinese president in the past five years.

“We hope that our [Chinese] colleagues will share the achievements of the 19th CPC National Congress with us, as we are interested in China’s plans for economic transformation,” Sergei Prikhodko was quoted as saying by TASS.

In addition to high-level dialogues, the prime minister will also participate in a live webcast held by People’s Daily Online to field questions from Chinese netizens. This is the second time that the Russian prime minister has interacted with Chinese citizens on social media. He took part in a similar activity held by People’s Daily Online in 2007.

His visit to China has been hailed by Chinese netizens as a “boost” for bilateral relations. As of press time, the webpage for the event has garnered over 100,000 views, with more than 5,000 questions being raised by Chinese netizens.

“China and Russia are good neighbors. The two nations’ deepened mutual trust and comprehensive cooperation will also benefit other countries, creating more opportunities for all,” wrote a netizen.
